The First Narrows Cossing is proposed to consist of a single new bridge constructed immediately to the east of the existing bridge, which will subsequently be dismantled and the materials recycled.
The new bridge will carry 6 lanes of traffic. In addition, the structure of the bridge will be used as the basis for the creation of a pedestrian oriented community linking both sides of Burrard Inlet. By designing the towers of the bridge to function as habitable space as well as simple support, and by suspending prefabricated modules in the cables, it is possible to provide accommodation for many of the facilities required for the creation of a compact close-knit community at a low marginal cost and with negligible impact on the natural environment.
This section illustrates some of the elements proposed for the new bridge.
Suspended Modules: These modules of approx. 100 m2 each have no specified use. The planning and circulation arrangements permit these modules to function as residential, commercial or business occupancies as conditions permit. One third of the available space will be left void, lending an air of transparency to the bridge and permitting the creation of large terraces and roof gardens.
Pedestrian Deck: Lined with neighbourhood amenities, yet with clear views out over Burrard inlet, this landscaped deck serves as the heart of the community as well as a pleasant pedestrian/cycle link and gateway to Stanley Park.
South Tower: At its base, the south tower serves as a marine gateway to Stanley Park. With landing facilities for small craft and amenities for those walking the sea wall, as well as elevator access to the pedestrian deck, what was, in the existing bridge, a single purpose structure, can be made a facility of great public utility and delight.
The upper levels of the tower can serve as a business oriented hotel, while at the summit a lookout point (complete with revolving restaurant encased in a glass dome) shares space with a control centre for harbour traffic and an interpretation centre exposing port activities to the public.
A r.o.w. is provided one level above the pedestrian deck for an ALRT line, affording the traveller fine views of both Burrard Inlet and the bridge activities.
Parking and service access is provided.
