Project Components

The basis of this proposal is, of course, a route from the North Shore to central Vancouver.
Despite concerns over potential adverse impacts compared to four-lane options, given the hundred year horizon of this project a six-lane proposal is, initially at least, entirely appropriate. In order to both carry this link, and take full advantage of such other opportunities as arise, it is proposed that this project include the
following components:
- Marine Circus: Built over a new interchange serving both bridge and local traffic, the Marine Circus is a mixed-use development which acts as the northern gateway to the project, transforming a vehicle- dominated area into a lively urban community.
- North Viaduct: a conventional structure carrying the roadway and housing a variety of urban functions in the large, and conventionally neglected, volume beneath the road surface.
- Capilano Quay: using the bridge structure as an anchor, Capilano Quay is intended, by the creation of urban amenities, to open for public use a waterfront area which is most usually blighted by
the heavy engineering work necessary for bridge support, and then abandoned.
- First Narrows Crossing: by modifying the traditional elements of the bridge structure to accommodate additional uses, the new bridge will not only carry the required vehicular traffic but will also create a pleasant and animated community linking the two sides of the First Narrows.
- Stanley Park Tunnel: although it might be suspected that concerns over the transient impact of a cut and cover tunnel are exagerated, nonetheless this proposal, initially at least, includes a bored tunnel with no negative impact on Stanley Park.
- Georgia Portal & Stanley Passage: in order to mitigate the effects of the works necessary to create a tunnel portal, this proposal includes a number of possible elements to enhance the amenity of this area.
- Transit: although it has been previously concluded that rail transit is not required, this is a position which may be reviewed, and this proposal includes provision for an ALRT right of way.
