How Many Lanes Do We Need?

• Traffic delays are concentrated on the approaches; efforts should be focused on HOV/bus queue jumper lanes.
• Forecast bus volumes do not justify the cost ($10M - $15M) of providing an additional bus-only lane as part of an expanded crossing. However the joint use of exclusive lanes for bus plus HOV's is a possibility in the future.
• Five or six lane facilities (with the 5th or 6th lanes being for the exclusive use of buses/HOV's) appear to have major adverse impacts compared to a four lane facility.
• All laning configurationsare to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians.

North Shore Marine Connections:

• Most promising new routes investigated:

  - Ambleside to Waterfront Station
  - Seymour River to Waterfront Station
  - Capilano to Waterfront Station

• Transit time competitiveness with existing services was "poor" for both Ambleside and Capilano marine routes, and "fair" for Seymour River to Waterfront Station.
• The Provincial Subsidy for ferries wouldbe much higher than for buses.
• Enhanced bus service and bus priorities still the best answer [July 1994 BC Transit report]
